Incredibly Depressing

I agree with this.

I was peeved by Seinfeld's comment, too, though I found it amusing at the time. Coupled with my earlier thread about elitism vs. populism, the director's remarks present an almost schizoid vision of the Academy -- rejecting the obnoxious summer blockbusters and crass commercial comedies for any consideration for the Oscars, yet maneuvering to exclude many documentaries from consideration. I can't recall where I read this, but one documentarian has pointed out that many of the nominated documentaries over the years have been distributed by one company -- a company whose owner happens to be a member of the Academy's documentary nominating committee.

Speaking of depressing Oscar moments. How about the opening? Ellen introduces the show by saying that Hollywood is run by Jews Gayes and Blacks. As if not to alientate Red America enough, this followed by a Gospel number extoling the vertues of Hoillywood. This elitist self indulgent display is divisive and unwarrented.
